When this Cornish clink was built in 1779, it was actually ahead of its time with separate cells for men and women, hot water and (reasonably) spacious living areas.

Walk through the main entrance and you definitely get the sense it’s a one-way ticket. Then the past soon whacks you in the head in The Dark Walk – a spooky cinematic experience that lets you step into the shoes of 18th century Cornwall’s miners, smugglers, and most notorious prisoners.

The Naval Wing takes you into the cells of child criminals (ideal moment for a ‘bad behaviour’ warning) and the Administration Block and Governor’s office reveal stories of the people who ran the institution.

And the best bit comes last. The Last Moments takes you right to the edge of ‘the UK’s only fully working execution pit’. But wait though…how do they know it’s ‘fully working’? Gulp.
