The idea of creating Forfar Curling Centre was first mooted when there was talk of the sale of the Dundee-Angus Ice Rink to become a supermarket site in 1989. Faced with the possibility of no curling facilities in the area, local businessman and keen curler Brian Bonnyman decided to investigate the construction of a curling rink in Forfar. With limited time between the closure of the Dundee rink and the start of another curling season Mr Bonnyman decided to purchase agricultural storage sheds at Suttieside and covert them into an ice rink. With the availability of a number of buildings he also decided to construct an indoor bowling stadium which could share bar and toilet facilities with the curlers. With the definite sale of Dundee announced a meeting was held on 16th March 1989 with local curling clubs at which the plans for the new rink were put to the clubs and received their enthusiastic backing. A similar meeting was held with bowlers.Forfar Indoor Sports Ltd owned by Mr Bonnyman and his family was established to fund the project. The construction started in April 1989 and with the help of family members was finalised in time for the opening on 30th September of that year. The new rink was officially opened by Mr Roy Sinclair then the President of RCCC (now Past-President of the WCCF) at a ceremony attended by hundreds of local curlers representing their clubs.A friendly bonspiel between representatives of all the clubs took place and curling at Forfar was launched. The sports centre continued to flourish under Mr Bonnyman's leadership until 2009 when the business was sold to local businessman and past RCCC Chairman, Mike Ferguson who, together with his wife Sandra, took over the helm and started a new chapter in the Curling Centre's history.
